How to Replace the Polishing Grinding Disc

Unplug the grinder. Disconnect from power when changing discs.
Remove the existing disc using the pin spanner to remove the spindle nut. A pin spanner is a tool with two projecting pins that locate in the two holes in the spindle nut. The spindle nut is the round nut that screws onto the grinder's spindle outside of the disc, to hold it in position.


Place the new disc on the grinder's spindle, replacing the old disc.
A 1mm cutting disc is flat and can be placed on the spindle with either face upward - they do not have a direction of cut. Ensure the disc is correctly located so that its bore is properly aligned and fitted to the spindle and the disc is flat and snug.


Now replace the spindle lock nut, with the flat face against the disc. This may be the opposite way round from the way it was originally, if the old disc was a grinding disc: A grinding disc is locked with the flat face of the lock nut outward and the stepped face inward; a cutting disc is locked with the flat face of the lock nut inward, against the disc.


With a 1mm disc, tighten by hand only, do not use the pin spanner. Pressing the lock button in, which is on the other side of the head of the grinder, firmly turn the spindle nut until it is hand tight and firm. If you do not have sufficient hand strength to lock the nut down firmly, then use the pin spanner - but lightly and carefully. There is absolutely no need to apply any force, because the direction of spin tightens the locknut.

 

Check that the disc guard is correctly aligned for the desired work position. This guard is the metal shield outside the disc. The guard can be rotated around the grinder head, and has a cut-out section that is aligned with the work. If the guard cannot be rotated easily then loosen the lock bolt that holds it in position. The guard is considered important in grinding jobs due to the extensive red-hot metal and stone splatter, but it can be removed for intricate cutting jobs if the operator has sufficient experience to use the tool safely. The guard can only be removed with no disc on the grinder.


Put on a full-face mask, put on some thin gloves if doing small and intricate work (welding gloves or heavy work gloves are too thick for use with a 4.5" grinder and will make the work too difficult, increase the risk of the tool slipping from the hands, and are much more likely to be cut by the grinder disc - thinner gloves are safer and better), plug in the grinder, and spin it up to test it.

 

In use, never be looking at the edge of a grinder disc. The disc throws debris off in line with the edge of the disc.The disc can shatter, and chunks of stone flying at significant speed can result, since the 4.5" grinder spins the disc at over 10,000rpm.


Never use a cutting disc to thin out the material, this is the job of a grinding disc. A regular grinding disc is 4 to 6mm thick, a regular cutting disc is 3mm thick, and thinner cutting discs come at 2.5mm, 2mm, 1.8mm, 1.5mm, 1mm, and 0.8mm thick. These discs are comparatively fragile - use them carefully, keep the cutting pressure carefully aligned with the disc body, and apply it smoothly.

 

Always attach the grinder's pin spanner to its power cord, next to the plug, so that the pin spanner cannot be lost. However half of the grinders you come across will have missing pin spanners - In this case remove a disc by having a partner hold the grinder on a flat surface with the disc facing upward. They press in the lock button (probably underneath, in this position). You strike the spindle nut with a light hammer applied to a screwdriver placed at an angle in one of the pin location holes. The thread is a standard right-hand thread, so that you will strike it anti-clockwise to loosen the nut.

 

The direction of rotation tightens up the spindle nut automatically. You may on occasion tighten the nut on a 9" grinder but that is a different matter, the work is far heavier. A 4 1/2" grinder or 'peanut grinder' just needs a hand-tight lock nut. Do the nut up firmly by hand, try to turn the disc on the spindle, if it slips then apply more hand pressure to the lock nut. You must depress the spindle locking button while tightening the lock nut. If your hands are weak then by all means use the spanner - but almost anyone can do these nuts up sufficiently by hand. The spin tightens the nut, so you'll find it much harder to get it off than put it on.
